Let’s begin with understanding what this 3-week period is all about.
The 17th day of the fourth Hebrew month, known as Tammuz, begins this three week period, and is observed as a fast day that commemorates the breaching of the walls of Jerusalem by Roman forces three weeks before the destruction of the Temple in the year 70 CE. It begins a three week period of mourning for the destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple, which culminates with the fast of the fifth month, Tisha B’Av, which we’ll discuss shortly. It is one of four fast days that commemorate different events relating to the destruction of Jerusalem. The prophet Zechariah promises that at the time of the future redemption, our mourning will turn to rejoicing and all four of these fast days will become feast days.
Thus said the LORD of Hosts: The fast of the fourth month, the fast of the fifth month, the fast of the seventh month, and the fast of the tenth month shall become occasions for joy and gladness, happy festivals for the House of Yehuda (Zechariah 8:19).
But what is this day Tisha B’Av mentioned above?
We learn in the Bible that shortly after the Exodus, Moses sent 12 men (spies) to scout out the Land of Canaan (Numbers 13:27). After 40 days of traversing the land, they returned and shared a negative report with the nation that crushed their spirits and broke their belief that they could successfully take possession of the land promised to them by God. God punished that generation for not trusting in Him, decreeing that they wander around the wilderness for 40 years instead of entering the Land of Israel right away. During that time, the older generation, those who lacked faith, died and the new, younger generation took their place and eventually inherited the Land.
This event and the subsequent decree took place on the 9th day of the Hebrew month of Av, known as Tisha B’Av, and would change the course of Jewish history forever.
Ever since that day, the 9th of Av has become a magnet for tragedy for the Jewish people, from the destruction of the First and Second Temples in Jerusalem to liquidation of the Warsaw Ghetto during the Holocaust. For this reason, Tisha B’Av, along with the three weeks leading up to it, has become a national period of mourning and repentance, prayer and introspection, for the people of Israel.
We invite you to take a journey together with us through these three weeks. A journey that is simultaneously personal, communal, national and global. A journey that focuses on increasing awareness of the tragedies that have plagued the Jewish people throughout their long history and that focuses on mourning, sincere prayer, heartfelt teshuvah (repentance), and a commitment to actions that will bring more goodness into the world.
You have a unique and powerful opportunity right now to stand alongside Israel in unity and participate with them during their time of mourning and cleansing in preparation for the 9th of Av and the days to come. History is repeating itself and the chaos around us is evidence that we’re in the Messianic era. Israel365 Charity Fund is dedicated to supporting those in need in Israel. We deliver food to the needy for the holidays, offer daily support and therapy for aging Holocaust Survivors, and even have a “boutique clothing store” where our patrons can get new clothes free of charge.
Support Holocaust Survivors
There are fewer than 200,000 Holocaust survivors in Israel today. A shocking 25% of these survivors live below the poverty line and so it is one of the main goals of the Israel365 Charity Fund to support impoverished Holocaust Survivors living today in Israel.
Contributing to the Safety and Security of the Holy Land
It isn’t enough just to inhabit the land, but the Jewish People must maintain their sovereignty. Israel365 Charity Fund in 2020 established the Israel365 Lone Soldier Center to provide for the brave young men and women who give their lives to their country. In addition, Israel365 Charity Fund as a special fund for victims of terror and families who have lost loved ones at the hands of Israel’s enemies.
