Seven species are mentioned in the Bible as being the special products of the land of Israel: wheat, barley, grapes, figs, pomegranates, olives, and dates. Jews celebrate these species with a special holiday called Tu B’Shvat, which occurs in the winter months. However, only now, as summer approaches, are these fruits are coming into season. In this video, an Israeli professor of Geography and Environment at Bar Ilan University describes how in Biblical times, our ancestors practiced agricultural sustainability by using every part of each plant and fruit.
